The Truth

  • India ranks a lowly 120th rank in the list of 122 countries rated on quality of potable water.
  •  Although India has 4% of the world’s water, studies show average availability is decreasing gradually, it is estimated that by 2020, India will become a water-stressed nation.
  • Nearly 80% of villages still don’t have any source of protected drinking water.
  • The rural population of India comprises more than 70 cores people residing in about 10.42 lacks habitations spread over 15 diverse ecological regions, According to a survey, 80% of rural India diseases occur due to contamination of water and consumption of unhealthy water.
  • The problems of chemical contamination is also prevalent in India with 180,000 habitations in the country are affected by poor water quality.

The hurdle

  • The major chemical parameters of concern in water are fluoride and arsenic.
  • Thousands of children and adults die who are effected due to flourosis in India ( Skeletal  and Non Skeletal Deformities )
  • Iron is also emerging as a major problem with many habitations showing excess iron in the water samples.
  • Despite huge expenditure, lack of safe and secure drinking water is never reached to the vulnerable sections
  • Water continues to be a major hurdle and a national economic burden.
  • On other hand the pressures of development is changing the distribution of water in the country.
